Thornton Tomasetti provided LEED consulting for the Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point redevelopment projects. Totaling 777 acres, the projects will include more than 11,900 housing units and 300 acres of parks and open space. Key features include public housing redevelopment, 635,000 square feet of retail, and 2.5 million square feet of commercial space oriented around green research and development. The project is LEED for Neighborhood Development Stage II Gold Pre-Certified, placing the project on track to meet the City and County of San Francisco’s requirement that all new construction and major renovation projects achieve a minimum of LEED Gold certification.
Reducing dependence on cars by incorporating accessibility to public transit is a key project objective. The project team worked with the local transit authority to create a transportation plan that identifies planned transit needs and includes street grid planning for pedestrians, bicycles, and local and rapid bus lanes. The project’s intent is to create a walkable, mixed-use development with access to schools, parks, and basic services.
Thornton Tomasetti coordinated with the owner and designers to manage the LEED pre-certification process by providing technical advice to the team, coordinating and managing the online documentation effort, and managing quality assurance and control procedures.
